Candle Safety

I cannot stress enough how important safety is in regard to candle burning. Candles look and smell fabulous, but do not be deceived! If you do not use proper care, candles can be dangerous! Please keep in mind the following:
  • Candles are not toys. Thus, do not allow children to "play" with them.
  • Do not leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Keep young children and pets away from your burning candles.
  • Do not burn your candles when there is a high draft.
  • Do not burn your candles close to highly flammable material, or next to drapes.
  • Always burn votives in a votive holder, and pillars on a designated candle holder.
  • Trim your wicks!! A wick that is too long is a fire hazard and will smoke. Trim your wicks to 1/8 of an inch before you light your candles.
  • When extinguishing a candle, use a wick snuffer. If you do not have a wick snuffer, place your finger in front of the flame, and blow ON your finger. The air will travel AROUIND your finger to extinguish the flame. Blowing air directly on the flame can be dangerous. Once you blow out the candle, dip the wick into the melted wax (with something that is NOT flammable) to ensure it is completely burned out.
  • If you notice your wick developing “mushroom heads”, do not panic. This is the sign of a strongly scented candle. Extinguish the candle and wait for it to cool. Once it cools, cut off the mushrooms and then re-light.
  • Only burn your candles until there is 1 to 2 inches of remaining wax, then discard.
  • For votives: place a couple of drops of water in the votive container before inserting your votive. This will make it easier to extract the excess wax once you're through burning the candle.
